Background: The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, said the U.S. will use its economic and political influence to bring about black majority rule in southern Africa but it would not give arms to either side in the struggle.

Dr. Kissinger was speaking in Dar Es Salaam in Tazania - the second stop in a seven nation African tour he is making to discuss the current crisis in southern Africa.

The first stop on the tour was in Kenya, where Dr. Kissinger had talks with President Jomo Kenyatti, at his country residence in Nakuru 100 miles (16 kilometres) from Nairobi.

After their discussions President Kenyatta and Dr. Kissinger mingled with tribal dancers and viewed Lak Nakuru's famed pink flamingos.

Dr. Kissinger then flew on to Dar Es Salaam where he had further talks on the southern African question with President Julius Nyerere.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting President Nyerere said that the only thing that could halt guerilla warfare in Rhodesia now would be the granting of black majority rule.

He said that anyone talking about achieving black majority rule now by peaceful means was talking about an impossibility.

Dr. Kissinger left Tanzania for Lusaka in Zambia on Monday (26 April).
