Background: A Tanzanian in delegation, led by Minister for Buildings Kassim Ali, has visited India to finalise contracts for the supply of equipment for an India-assisted industrial estate on the island of Zanzibar.
The delegation, which met with India's Minister for Industries T.A. Pai on Tuesday (27 April), also explored the possibilities of setting up a plant for manufacture building materials in Tanzania.
The Tanzanian Minister told Mr. Pai that his country had an immediate need for a large number of tipper trucks and other transportation equipment and would like to order these from India.
The Zanzibar industrial estate is the first of its kind in Tanzania. It was set up with technical know-how and equipment supplied by India's National Industrial Development Corporation, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Industry and Civil Supplies.
It already houses a few light industries but the government hopes that it would eventually produce a large number of items now being imported.
