Background: Leka the First, pretender to the Albanian throne has denied reports he masterminded the recently attempted invasion of Albania in an interview on September 30. Son of Former King Zog, 43-year-old Leka fled his homeland when he was two days old. When asked whether aim was to see Albania liberate, then the people could decide by referendum whether they wanted a republic or a monarchy. He said he thought there was extensive reports that he was behind the attempted commando raid into Albania on September 26, Leka said he knew of the operation but it was not staged by members of his own Nationalist group. The Albanian news agency publicised the attempted invasion on September 28. It was reported that a group of Albanian emigres landed on the coast but were discovered and killed by security forces and local residents. Leka expressed his full support for the raid and his respect for the courage of those who had taken part.
