Background: The Munich Olympic Park is having financial difficulties. The athletic faculties are idle and this is costing thousands of dollars a day. Several events held there have been financial disasters and a recently signed contract for soccer games in the main stadium is the only thing keeping the operators solvent.
There have been non-financial mistakes too... a memorial created to the Israeli athletes massacred during the games had to be replaced, and no-one has yet decided what to do with the bullet-marked Israeli building.
As for the Olympic Village ... that's a problem area. It was planned for eventual use as a bright self-contained apartment community, but the apartments are so highly priced that few people can afford to live there.
SYNOPSIS: The Munich Olympic Park is in trouble... almost four months have passed since the Games, and the athletic facilities sit idle... costing the park operators thousands of dollars a day. Several events held since the Games have been financial disasters, and a recently-signed contract for soccer games in the main stadium is the only thing keeping the operators solvent.
There have been non-financial mistakes too. A memorial erected to the Israeli athletes massacred during the Games, had to be replaced because of a mistake in listing the victims, and complaints that it bore a Christian Cross and no Star of David.
The Israeli building still has bullet holes in the walls, and no-one seems to know what is to happen to it. There are thoughts of turning the building into a memorial library... but it hasn't been decided who should be responsible. As for the rest of the village... it was planned to be a bright self-contained apartment community... but now it looks like a ghost town.
At the times of the Games it was claimed that almost all the apartments in the male athletic village had been let. Now it seems this wasn't so... thirteen hundred are still free and local people say this is because they are overpriced. Seventeen hundred have been sold or let but most are still empty while renovation proceeds very slowly. The Bavarian government is suing the builders for alleged overprinting... and the builders counter-claim that the Olympic Committee owes millions of dollars in back rent. Meanwhile, oblivious to all the controversy... a small band of building superintendents have taken up quarters in most of the buildings. Their Christmas was spent in a kind of isolated splendour and they look forward to some future day when the builders say they will have some tenants to superintend.
