Background: Palam airport echoed to an exultant hurrah throated by a big jubilient crowd of relatives, friends, officials and admirers as two airforce dakotas landed the Indian Everest Champions there at about noon today.
They said it with flowers and hugs and handshakes and hugs again and again. "Well Done", "We are proud of your team", Mr. Gulzari Lal Nanda, acting Prime Minister told leader Commander M.S.Kohli as he walked down the gangplank with a slight limp. "Well Done, Boys," defence Minister Chavan told them. For sunny, the six month old son of Lt. Commander Kohli, the happy pandemonium was a little too much.
They looked fatigued but happy to be back from where they started four months and a day ago, determined and hopeful. The long preparations, the hectic efforts, the setbacks and the ultimate triumph was writ large on their faces.
Immediately after their arrival, the expedition members were surrounded by the enthusiastic crowds. In the evening the defence Minister had organised a reception in their honour. The ordinance workers who have been directly associated with the expedition (most of the equipment was indigenous) were presented with a silver ice axe.
