Background: A fascinating research experiment is taking place at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University in Japan. Researchers are using computers in an effort to communicate with chimpanzees.

SYNOPSIS: Experiments in communicating with the lower primates have been underway at the Institute for several years. A number of primates are involved and four year old Ai, the chimp, has so far proven the most communicative. She has learned to operate her computer keyboard to communicate with and respond to researchers, with better than 90 percent accuracy.

What the researchers are asking the chimpanzee to do in these tests is respond to the objects placed before her. She does this by pushing the appropriate button on the keyboard that represents the wide variety of household goods she sees.

The success of the chimps responses are monitored on computer printouts. And her ability to distinguish between household objects is being stretched one step further. She's being asked to differentiate between colours and shapes.

This research aims not only at developing rudimentary means of communication with other primates but more importantly at contributing to our better understanding of human intelligence itself. The researchers are attempting to establish how human reasoning abilities evolved and how they operate.

The Scientists working here at the Kyoto University believe that only with the help of lower primates, such as Ai the Chimp, can humans gather a truer understanding of the human thought process and potential.
