Background: Six records were toppled on Sunday (July 21) during Senegal's national athletics championships in Dakar.

Women athletes shone during the titles and accounted for five of the new records.

Fatcu Cissoko put her name in the record book with a 12.2 seconds win in the 100 metres, while Yacine Mbaye finished with two nw times to her credit - the 800 metres in two minutes 18.4 seconds and the 1500 metres in four minutes 50.4 seconds.

The shot put for women went to D'Aminata Mbengue with a record heave of 12.79 metres, while in the four by 100 metres relay the Jeann???d d'Arc team raced to yet another new national record.

The lone man to uphold male honours was pole vaulter Abbas Dougjaby with a record clearance of 4.25 metres.

It wasn't surprising, therefor, that at the close of the titles a woman won the coveted title of Athlete of the Year. Senegal's President Leopold Senghor presented the cup that accompanies the title to Marieme Boye. Earlier she had won the women's 400 metres dash.

President Senghor also presented cups to Fatou Cissoko, winner of the women's 100 metres sprint, and Adam Fall who scored in the men's 100 metres.
