Background: BRITAIN'S LATEST SUPERSONIC RESEARCH AIRCRAFT MADE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT TODAY (FRIDAY). IT WILL BE USED FOR RESEARCH THAT SHOULD SPEED UP DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANGLO-FRENCH SUPERSONIC CONCORD PASSENGER AIRLINER.

IT MADE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT FROM FILTON, NEAR BRISTOL, AND "WENT LIKE A DREAM," ACCORDING TO THE PILOT. KNOWN AS THE BAC-221, THE TINY SINGLE-SEATER IS A COMPLETELY REBUILT VERSION OF THE FAIREY DELTA TWO THAT SET UP A WORLD RECORD OF MORE THAN 1,100 MILES (1,760 KMS) AN HOUR IN 1956.

IT HAS THE SAME SLENDER DELTA-SHAPED WING THAT WILL BE USED ON THE CONCORD PASSENGER-CARRYING JET. TODAY IT FLEW AT ONLY 300 MILES (480 KMS) AN HOUR, BUT IN FUTURE FLIGHTS ITS JOB IS TO SHOW HOW THIS WING REACTS IN SUPERSONIC FLIGHT.

AFTER A MAIDEN FLIGHT OF JUST UNDER HALF-AN-HOUR, THE BAC-221 CAME IN TO A PERFECT LANDING.
