Background: Leading Socialists from more than 20 European countries, together with a delegation from Israel, converged on Brussels yesterday, 12th June, for a three-day series of discussions on peace, the international political situation and the question of help to underdeveloped countries.

It is a meeting of the Socialist International, specially convened in the setting of the Brussels Exhibition.

    M. Victor Larock, Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs, welcomed some of the foremost personalities of Western Socialism, including Mr. Ansurin Bevan and Mr. Hugh Gaitskell, of British Mr. Carlo Schmidt, Germany, M. Gerard Jacquet and M. Jules Moch, France, M. Huy???, President of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies, and Mrs. Anna Ketly, exiled member of the Social Democratic Party of Hungary.

Mr. Bevan told the delegates yesterday of a British Labour Party plan to allot about GBP500,000,000 a year to the under-developed countries -- if the party was returned to power at the next election. He hoped Socialism in other countries would follow this example.

Today Mr. Gaitskell was to present a report on international affairs.
