Background: PRESIDENT DE GAULLE, ON THE SECOND DAY OF HIS STATE VISIT TO GREECE, TODAY (FRIDAY) LAID A WREATH ON THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR IN ATHENS.

THOUSANDS OF GREEKS CROWDING THE AREA BEFORE THE MEMORIAL WERE KEPT AT A DISTANCE FROM THE OFFICIAL PARTY BY A STRONG GUARD OF HUNDREDS OF POLICE AND SECURITY FORCES.

AFTER INSPECTING A GUARD OF HONOUR OF KILTED EVZONE TROOPS, THE PRESIDENT DROVE WITH A MOUNTED ESCORT TOWARDS THE GREEK PARLIAMENT WHERE HE WAS TO ADDRESS A SPECIAL SESSION.ON THE CEREMONIAL DRIVE PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MR.CONSTANTINE KARAMANLIS, THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER.

THE RESIDENT WAS WELCOMED TO THE PARLIAMENT BY THE SPEAKER, MR.CONSTANTINE RODOPOULOS.ALMOST ALL OF THE 300 DEPUTIES WERE PRESENT AND THE GALLERIES WERE PACKED TO CAPACITY.

RESIDENT DE GAULLE TOLD THE ASSEMBLY THAT IN THE PRESENT DANGEROUS STATE OF THE WORLD, THE ATLANTIC ALLIANCE WAS THE ONLY GUARANTEE OF PEACE FOR THE FREE PEOPLES - AND GREECE WAS THE "FORWARD POST OF THE ALLIANCE."
BUT, THE FRENCH PRESIDENT SAID, DESPITE THE NECESSARILY CLOSE LINKS OF ALLIANCES AND CO-OPERATION, FRANCE AND GREECE WERE BOTH RENDERING A "SUPREME SERVICE" TO MANKING BY REMAINING THEMSELVES AS NATIONS AND STATES.
