TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: "Twenty years ago Joseph Gallo also known as Crazy Joe begin to rise in the Brooklyn underworld during a gang war that led to a dozen deaths. This morning Gallo himself was shot to death while celebrating his 43rd birthday in a restaurant in Manhattan's "Little Italy" section. A single assailant entered the Clam Bar by a side door and started shooting hitting Gallo three times. His bodyguard was also wounded in a fight which spilled out into the street. At least fourteen persons witnessed the killing, including Gallo's wife - a bride of three weeks. She was among those questioned at a local station house. There was immediate speculation that Gallo was killed in revenge for the shooting nine months ago of Joseph Colombo another reputed Brooklyn underworld leader. Albert Seedman, New York's Chief of Detectives, was asked about this today.

SEQ. 6: SEEDMAN: "We don't have anything to lead us to that conclusion at this time and we have been actively engaged in investigating the shooting of Joe Colombo and there's nothing has turned up that would at this time make us come to the conclusion that Colombo's people shot Gallo."

Background: New York police said on Saturday (8 April) that the murder of underworld leader, Joseph Gallo the previous night was either the end of a Mafia war that has claimed thirteen victims - or the beginning of a new, perhaps bloodier, war.

Gallo was shot dead in a restaurant as he dined with his new wife - and 10-year-old stepdaughter.

Police chances of solving the crime are considered slim. Their past record of success in underworld murders is only one per cent.

SYNOPSIS: The body of New York underworld leader Joe Gallo was carried late on Friday from the Manhattan restaurant where he was shot dead by an unknown assailant.

Police officers spent many hours at the restaurant after the shooting trying to discover how the murder fitted in with the known movements of underworld figures. But they could find no leads - and no clear motive.

Gallo's wife of one month was one of fourteen witnesses questioned by the police. She was dining with Gallo and his 10-year-old stepdaughter when the gunman burst in and fired three shots. Could the crime be connected with the shooting of Joe Colombo nine months ago?
