Background: An Eastern Air Lines Super Constellation passenger plane, its landing gear stuck, circled the Charlotte airport early on the afternoon of May 8th while its crew tried frantically to correct the fault.

The flight, 701, southbound for Atlanta, had taken off at noon from Detroit when it was discovered that the landing gear had stuck half way up. The plane levelled off at 1,500 feet and began circling while attempts were made to close or open the landing gear.

With 65 people on board the plane was eventually brought down safely and the faulty equipment corrected.
