SOUND STARTS: "Ah, what Mr. Irving wanted to tell.."

SOUND ENDS: "..... about the fact yet".

HOME IN IBIZA WHERE THE IRVINGS LIVE; MRS IRVING POURING A DRINK; MR. IRVING AND LAWYER OUTSIDE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, AND LAWYER SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN.

NESSEN: "Ah, what Mr. Irving wanted to tell the District attorney's office - and did tel them - was that his wife actually opened the account.."

NEWSMEN: "The account where the cheques were deposited?"

    NESSEN: "Yes..."

NEWSMEN: "In the name of H.R. Hughes she opened it?"

    NESSEN: "Yes."

NEWSMAN: "For what purpose did she open it in another name?"

NESSEN: "I believe that it was opened in H.R. Hughes' name.. that's correct.. and I don't... I'm not sure....".

NEWSMEN: "Why did Mrs. Irving use the name H.R. Hughes?"

NESSEN: "I haven't interviewed Mrs. Irving."

NEWSMAN: "Mr. Irving, could you shed some light on that?"

NESSEN: "No, Mr. Irving does not answer."

    NEWSMAN: "Is his book authentic?"

NESSEN: "Yes, we still say it's authentic."

NEWSMAN: "is this latest revelation going to injure the prospects for the book, yes of no?"

    NESSEN: "well, let's not answer...."

NEWSMAN: "Don't you find it somewhat incredible that it now comes out that it was indeed Mrs. Irving who opened the account?"

NESSEN: "It don't know enough about the case to answer that. I find anything that involves Mr. Hughes frankly very....."

NEWSMAN: "Was it indicated to you when they told - is this the first authority that found out that it was a fact or was it known a week or even two weeks ago?"

NESSEN: "I think yesterday was the first time."

NEWSMAN: "Does Mr. Irving still contend that he handed cheques to Howard Hughes?"

NESSEN: "Yes, I think he does."

NEWSMAN: "So he drew out the money also - the six hundred and fifty....."

NESSEN: "I just don't know about the facts yet."

(Mr. Irving is in New York as defendant in a 55-million dollar -- 22 million pounds sterling - damages suit filed by Swiss art dealer, Fernand Legros, who claims he was defamed in an earlier book written by Mr. Irving entitled "Fake".)

Background: Mr. Clifford Irving - the author of the controversial but as yet unpublished biography of recluse millionaire Howard Hughes - is now in New York.

On Friday (28 Jan) he was interviewed by officials at the Manhattan District Attorney's office - which is checking on whether any fraud is involved in the book.

The authenticity of the biography has been challenged by Howard Hughes in a sworn statement, and in a much-publicised telephone news conference.

Surprise development of the week was the news that the "mystery blonde" who deposited cheques from the publishers of the biography into a Swiss bank account was the author's wife, Mrs. Edith Irving.

She opened the account in the of "H.R. HUGHES" and it was this account which Mr. Irving's new lawyer, Mr. Nessen, was questioned about when he and Mr. Irving left the District Attorney's office.
