Background: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria began talks in Cairo on Thursday night (27 March) on new Arab Middle East strategy following the failure of Dr. Henry Kissinger's most recent peace mission.

The two Arab leaders arrived in the Egyptian capital on the same aircraft from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia where, with many other Middle East leaders, they attended the funeral of King Faisal.

They are also expected to discuss the prospects for an Arab summit meeting to co-ordinate policies following the death of King Faisal and the breakdown in the United States Secretary of State's latest round of shuttle talks between Israel and the Arab states.

The idea of an early summit conference was discussed by Arab heads of state while they were in Riyadh, according to informed sources in Cairo, and Presidents Sadat and Boumedienne planned to explore the possibility further.

Egyptian officials said Arab solidarity had become stronger as a result of "recent developments" and that there was more awareness of the dangers of new divisions in the Arab world.
