He bettered his own record of last year by five kilograms (11 pounds), but failed, in another attempt, to lift 190 kilograms (418 pounds).
Christov, a 20-year-old soldier, also attempted to break the world record for the jerk event, but failed. The record currently stands at 237.5 kilograms (522.5 pounds) and Christov was trying to lift 250 kilograms (550 pounds).
Second in the event was Juri Sazev of the Soviet Union, with a snatch of 172.5 kilograms (379.5 pounds). Juergen Ciezki of East Germany was third with a snatch of 170 kilograms (374 pounds) -- a new East German record.
SYNOPSIS: The European weight-lifting Championships continued in East Berlin on Saturday with the staging of the heavy-weight events. Valentin Christov broke the world record with this snatch. He lifted 185 kilograms, to beat the record he set last year by five kilograms.
He tried to lift 190 kilograms, but failed.
Christov is 20 years old and is a soldier in Bulgaria.
In the jerk event, which he also won, Christov again attempted the world record. That currently stands at 237.5 metres, and Christov had three attempts at lifting 250 kilograms. All were unsuccessful.
Second in the event was Juri Sazev of the Soviet Union. He lifted 172 point 5 kilograms. Juergen Ciezki of East Germany set a new East German record with his snatch of 170 kilograms and took third place.
