Background: In Puerto Rico the biggest-ever demonstration calling for independence was held in San Juan on Sunday (September 12) as 47 United States State Governors met in the City for a four-day Governor's conference. About 25,000 people took part in the massive but peaceful rally, and they marched past the two hotels where the Governors and Vice-President Spiro Agnew are staying.

SYNOPSIS: A massive rally was held in San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico, on Sunday when about 25,000 people joined in a march to demand independence from the United States. The demonstration was aimed at the meeting of American State Governors in the city, where 47 Governors and Vice-President Spiro Agnew gathered to discuss topics including prison reform and how the State Governments could get more money from the Federal Government. About 2,000 police were called in to guard the two hotels where the Governors were staying, but no trouble was reported. As the demonstrators marched past there were shouts of 'Yankee Go Home'.

The independence movement, representing about ten per cent of the population, wants to cut Puerto Rico's 'commonwealth' status and close economic ties with the United States. A larger movement, however wants Puerto Rico to become the fifty-second State of the USA.
