  • Description

THE COMMANDER OF THE TENTH GURKHA BRIGADE LIEUTENANT COLONEL RONALD McALLISTER DESCRIBING THE EVENTS OF SATURDAY OVER PICTURES OF KEY POINTS DURING THE FIGHTING.

    TRANSCRIPT:

MCALLISTER: "AND THE GUNS WERE FIRING INTO THIS POST. THE SNIPER FIRE WAS BEING FIRED INTO THIS POST FROM WINDOWS IN A HOUSE ON BRITISH TERRITORY LITERALLY ABOUT 45 YARDS AWAY."

REPORTER: "THERE WAS ALSO SOME MACHINE-GUN FIRE THAT CAME RIGHT THROUGH THE TOWER HERE. THAT WALL'S SPRAYED WITH BULLET MARKS. WAS THAT MACHINE-GUN FIRE"

MCALLISTER: "IT LOOKS LIKE IT TO ME BUT I WASN'T HERE SO I CAN'T SAY FOR CERTAIN"

REPORTER: "WAS THE ACTUAL FIRING COMING FROM WHERE THE RED FLAG IS?"

MCALLISTER: I THINK SOME OF THE MACHINE-GUN FIRE CERTAINLY CAME FROM WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE SAND BAGGED EMPLACEMENTS. THEY WEREN'T THERE YESTERDAY. THERE WAS NO NEED TO SANDBAG THE EMPLACEMENTS AGAINST RELATIVELY LIGHTLY ARMED POLICE. THEY SANDBAGGED THEM THIS MORNING IN RESPONSE TO THE SANDBAGGING I'VE BEEN DOING ON MY SIDE OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BORDER, I SHOULD SAY, WAS PROBABLY DONE BY SNIPERS FIRING NOT HEAVILY BUT OVER A MATTER OF A NUMBER OF HOURS FROM VERY CLOSE RANGE--APPROXIMATELY 45 TO 50 YARDS - FROM THOSE TWO WINDOWS IN THE WHITE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY TO OUR FRONT."

REPORTER: "THE ACTUAL BORDER RUNS DOWN THE CENTRE OF THE ROAD WE'RE LOOKING AT?"

MCALLISTER: "THE CENTRE OF THE ROAD. THERE IS NO ACTUAL BARRIER ??? ANY SORT. THE RED FLAG THAT YOU SEE IS ON TOP OF A ??? SHOP AND THAT ALSO HAS SOME COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA ??? IN RED LETTERS".

Background: IN HONG KONG THERE WAS COMPARATIVE CALM TONIGHT (MONDAY) AFTER THIS MORNING'S RIOTS IN WHICH ONE DEMONSTRATOR WAS KILLED. TOUGH BRITISH GURKHA TROOPS HAVE BEEN CONSOLIDATING THEIR POSITIONS AT SHA TAU KOK WHERE FIVE HONG KONG POLICEMEN WERE KILLED ON SATURDAY IN THE MOST SERIOUS BORDER INCIDENT FOR YEARS.

THE BORDER IN SHA TAU KOK RUNS DOWN THE MAIN STREET. A CHINESE MACHINE GUNNER, FIRING FROM ACROSS THE STREET, KILLED FIVE POLICEMEN, AND WOUNDED 12 - FIVE OF THEM SERIOUSLY-BEFORE THE GURKHAS WERE ABLE TO RELIEVE THEM.

ACCORDING TO A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN, TROUBLE BEGAN WHEN CROWDS FROM ACROSS THE BORDER ON THE CHINESE SIDE ATTACKED THE SHA TAU KOK VILLAGE POLICE POST ON THE HONG KONG SIDE, HURLING EXPLOSIVES AT THE SURROUNDING FENCE. RIOT POLICE OPENED FIRE WITH CARBINES AND PISTOLS AND TWO CHINESE WERE HIT, THE SPOKESMAN SAID.

THEN, ACCORDING TO POLICE OFFICER, A MACHINE GUNNER OPENED UP FROM A WINDOW OF A BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET. HIS BULLETS RAKED THE POLICE LINES AND THEN THE POLICE POST AND THE RURAL COMMITTEE BUILDING BEHIND IT WHERE POLICE HAD TAKEN COVER. A POLICEMAN REPORTED THAT THERE WAS SPORADIC FIRE FROM THREE OR FOUR POSITIONS.

TWO COMPANIES OF A GURKHA BATTALION TOGETHER WITH TWO ARMOURED CAR PATROLS WERE RUSHED INTO THE VILLAGE AND THEMSELVES CAME UNDER FIRE.

THEY FIRST RELIEVED THE RURAL COMMITTEE BUILDING WHERE FOUR POLICEMEN, TWO CHINESE AND TWO PAKISTANIS HAD DIED. A FIFTH POLICEMAN ALSO CHINESE, LAY MORTALLY WOUNDED AND DIED LATER IN HOSPITAL.

THEY THEN RELIEVED THE POLICE POST, WHERE SOME 80 POLICEMEN HAD BEEN PINNED DOWN BY THE MACHINE GUN FIRE.

LT. COL. McALLISTER TALKED TO REPORTERS ABOUT THE INCIDENT.
