Background: LONDON, U.K. AND KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

A sharp drop in tin prices has put pressure on Third World nations to accept a new international agreement to regulate world trade in the metal. Western industrial nations want to set up a reserve of tin to maintain the price of the metal although tin producing nations in Asia and Latin America fear that this will reduce their export earning. However, it seems likely that the Western plan will be accepted, since tin prices have fallen by 26 per cent in the last nine months, due to falling demand in the industrialised world. A meeting of the Tin Council in London opened on Monday (8 March) to attempt agreement on the production of tin in the immediate future.
