Background: Skill and experience won the day for tennis stars at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadow, New York, on September 2. Five-times winner Chris Evert-Lloyd began in strong form, beating fellow American Kelly Henry 6-1, 6-0. Here, she won a long rally with a passing shot after surviving several smashes from the net. Franco-American rivalry reached a peak with 22-year-old Yannick Noah -- France's number one -- pitted against Brian gottfried. At first, Gottfried put on the pressure, defeating the black Frenchman's noted agility with a ferocious smash from the net. But in the end it was Noah who came out on top, beating the American 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. John McEnroe began his third defence of his title against Tim Gullikson. An early mistake produced a bitter display of temper, but he recovered to win 7-6, 6-4, 7-5. The young American Tracy Austin also won her second game of the tournament. She beat Beth Norton 7-6, 6-3.
