Background: Avro Vulvan bombers of the Royal Airforce flew over South America for the first time today as they escorted the Comet 2 bringing Air Secretary George Ward to be special Ambassador to the installation of Dr. Arturo Frondizi as President of the Argentine Republic, The planes will take part in the Installation ceremonies, with their seventy air and ground crew personnel, and will give flying displays in Rio de Janiero.

The commander of the detachment Air Marshal G.A. Walker, CBE, DSO, DFC, AFC, is the co-pilot of one of the Vulcans.

On arrival at Ezeiza at the International Airport, Air Secretary George Ward and Air-Marshall Walker were presented to the Commander General of the Argentine Air Force, and his aides, after which a press conference was held. Later Mr. Ward went by car to the city of Buenos Aires, 60 kms from Ezeiza Airport.

Mr. Ward has had a distinguished politico/military career as a Member of Parliament (for Worcester) as Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, and as Secretary of State for Air, to which appointment he succeeded in January 1958.

No less distinguished is Air Marshal Walker's record. A veteran of 24 years service with the R.A.F. his heroism cost him his right arm. He has commanded the first Group of RAF Bomber Command since 1956.

The Comet 2 belongs to one of the first jet-equipped military Transport Squadrons in the world; while the streamlined Avro Vulcan is among the world's deadliest bombers and can carry a thermo-nuclear weapon anywhere in the world from the British Isles.
