Background: The deputy chief of the Palestine Liberation Organisation's (PLO) Paris office was killed in a bomb explosion in the French capital on July 23. Mr. Fadel El-Dani entered his car outside his home when three men walked up and a bomb was thrown. Mr. Dani was in charge of information at the PLO mission in Paris. He was the most recent in a long list of Palestinians to be murdered in Europe. At least eight Palestinian activists have been assassinated in France during the last ten years, including two chiefs of the Paris mission - one in 1972 and the other i 1978. An anonymous caller claimed responsibility for the attack on Mr. Dani, and said it was in retaliation for the murder of Palestinian activist Youssef Mubarak in Paris in 1980. The caller said Mr. Dani had participated in the killing. Heavy police security surrounded Mr. Dani's wrecked vehicle after the explosion as forensic experts moved in to try to gain some clues as to the identity of the bombers.
