Background: Gjastikki volcano on the north side of Iceland erupted on Friday afternoon. It was the fourth volcanic eruption on the north side of Iceland in the last 12 months. The eruption occurred along a two kilometre (1.5 miles) rift in the earth's crust. The lava was ejected some 40 to 50 metres into the air. A thin lava stream is flowing north from the eruption side. No-one was hurt and no houses or settlements are threatened.
