Background: Twenty-seven drivers representing fifteen countries are expected to drive Saturday's (March 4th) South African Grand Prix.

The race is the second in the 1972 Formula One series.

Leading the field in the first two official practice sessions was the British driver, Jackie stewart -- the world motor racing champion, who has already won this season's first championship race, the Argentine Grand Prix.

The second day of practice was on Thursday (March 2nd) when Jackie Stewart completed the 2.549 mile (4.103km) course in 1 minute 17.3 seconds. That's an average speed of 118.744 miles-an-hour (119.1 kph).

Others with fast times were Emerson Fittipaldi of Brazil -- his average was 118.558 miles-an-hour (190.8 kph) -- Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland, Jackie Ickx of Belgium, and Ronnie Peterson of Sweden, all of whom averaged 117.874 miles-an-hour (189.8 kph).
