Background: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF MEN'S TAILORING WERE ON DISPLAY AT LONDON'S SAVOY HOTEL TODAY (TUESDAY) WHEN THE FIRM OF HEPWORTHS PRESENTED THEIR CENTENARY COLLECTION.

THERE ARE SOME REVOLUTIONARY CHANGES IN STORE FOR THE WELL-DRESSED MAN OF THE FUTURE IF HARDY AMIES, THE FIRMS CONSULTANT DESIGNER, IS ANY GUIDE. HIS NEW MODELS SHOW SWINGING CAPES FOR EVENING WEAR, AND FOR COUNTRY WEAR - HIGH-BUTTONING, CUTAWAY JACKETS, WAISTCOATS BUTTONING TO THE NECK WITH LEG TIGHT TROUSERS TUCKED INTO KNEE-HIGH BOOTS, OR CUTTING OFF AS KNEE-BREECHES WORN WITH STOCKINGS.

EVER-NARROWING TROUSERS ARE EVIDENT IN THIS COLLECTION. ONE SUMMER SUIT, WORN UNDER A CONTINENTAL-STYLED OVERCOAT, FEATURED TROUSERS ELASTIC-STRAPPED UNDER THE FOOT AND JUST TIGHT ENOUGH TO DISPENSE WITH THE CENTRE-CREASE OF THE PRESENT DAY. THIS IS TOPPED BY A FOUR-BUTTON COLLARLESS JACKET IN CHECK TWEED.

EVENING WEAR OF THE FUTURE WAS TYPIFIED BY AN 'ULTRA-SMART' MODEL WITH AN EVENING CAPE IN BARATHEA, COLLARLESS AND WITHOUT FASTENING, LINED IN BLUE SATIN. UNDERNEATH, THE DINNER JACKET IS A FIVE-BUTTON, HIGH-FASTENING GARMENT WITH A GHILLIE COLLAR IN BLACK VELVET, BOUND WITH BLACK SILK BRAID. CALF-LENGTH BOOTS ARE WORN OVER SMOOTH CLOSE-FITTING TROUSERS.

THE FASHIONS OF A CENTURY WERE HIGHLIGHTED BY EXAMPLES FROM THE FIRM'S WARDROBE. ONE - FROM 1883 - SHOWED HOW THE ADVENT OF THE BICYCLE INSPIRED NEW DESIGN. THE STYLE FOLLOWED WAS THAT OF THE RIDING OUTFITS OF THE DAY - KNICKERBOCKER TROUSERS, CLOSELY ALLIED TO RIDING BREECHES, WORN WITH A HIGH-FASTENING, MILITARY-STYLE JACKET.

FASHIONS CHANGED LITTLE IN THE PERIOD BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WARS -AND THE ONE, UGLY ATTEMPT TO REVIVE THE EDWARDIAN KNICKERBOCKERS CAME WITH THE 'PLUS-FOUR SUIT' OF THE 1930'S. ANOTHER REMINDER OF THE EDWARDIAN AGE WAS THE EXPENSIVE LOOKING EVENING DRESS WITH TOP HAT AND BROWN CHECK CAPED COAT.

THE QUIET PERIOD BETWEEN THE WARS ALSO SAW THE BIRTH OF THE "OXFORD BAGS" - SIMILAR TO THE SQUARE, WIDE-TROUSERED, STYLELESS SUITS OF THE NEXT TWENTY YEARS. MANY OF THESE SUITS ARE STILL WORN TODAY.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE AGAIN - A MODEL IN A WHITE LINEN BLAZER-JACKET, WORN WITH BLUE FANNEL SLACKS. THE HIGH-BUTTON STYLE IN SUITS AND COATS IS EXEMPLIFIED BY ONE IN SHADES OF SILVER GREY THAT HAS A TOUCH OF INFORMALITY ABOUT IT, FOR SUMMER WEAR.

SPICE IS THE NEW COLOUR FOR 1965, SAYS HARDY AMIES, AND MODELLED IS A LIGHT SPICE RAGLAN COAT IN FLECKED DONEGAL TWEED WITH, UNDER IT, A FIVE-BUTTON BLAZER SUIT IN LIGHT SPICE BEDFORD CORD.

A MOTORING COAT FOR NEXT YEAR IS DOUBLE-BREASTED, IN FOAMBACKED NYLON AND COTTON. IT TOO IS RIGHT UP TO DATE WITH THE HIGH FASTENING LOOK THAT IS THE FEATURE OF THIS COLLECTION.

FINALLY ANOTHER SUIT TO ROUND OFF THE PARADE - THIS ONE A TWEED VERSION IN PEPPER AND SALT.
