Background: THOUSANDS OF TURKISH-CYPRIOTS GATHERED IN NICOSIA YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TO WATCH OR TAKE PART IN CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE NATIONAL TURKISH YOUTH AND SPORTS FESTIVAL. CELEBRATIONS WENT AHEAD DESPITE ADVICE FROM THE UNITED NATIONS THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON TALKS TO SETTLE THE ISLAND'S INTER-COMMUNAL CONFLICT.

TURKISH-CYPRIOT TEENAGERS MARCHED WITH PRECISION IN THE FESTIVAL AND MANY OF THEM CARRIED REAL WEAPONS IN A YOUTH AND SPORTS FESTIVAL THAT HAD A MARKED MILITANT ACCENT - AN ACCENT THAT WAS LATER EMPHASISED BY TURKISH SOLDIERS FIGHTING A SIMULATED BATTLE BEFORE AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE.

AMONG THOSE WATCHING WERE THE TWO LEADERS OF THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT COMMUNITY MR. RAUF DENKTASH AND DR. FADIL KUTCHUK. DR. KUTCHUK WS RE-ELECTED UNOPPOSED AS THE ISLAND'S VICE-PRESIDENT IN FEBRUARY WHILE MR. DENKTASH RETURNED TO CYPRUS IN APRIL AFTER FOUR YEARS OF EXILE.

UNVEILING A STATUE OF AN EOKA FIGHTER YESTERDAY PRESIDENT MAKARIOS SAID THAT HIS GREEK-CRYPRIOT GOVERNMENT WAS "KEEPING THE DOOR OPEN FOR TALKS" WITH THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS.

SINCE LAST NOVEMBER'S CRISIS, WHEN TURKEY THREATENED TO INVADE CYPRUS AFTER RENEWED INTER-COMMUNAL FIGHTING UNITED NATIONS OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN MAKING EFFORTS TO ARRANGE A PEACE SETTLEMENT. BUT NEGOTIATIONS HAVE BOGGED DOWN OVER THE VENUE OF THE TALKS. THE GREEK-CYPRIOTS WANT LOCAL MEETINGS AND THE TURKS FAVOUR A CONFERENCE OUTSIDE CYPRUS.
