Background: Pope John Paul returned to the Vatican City on Wednesday (18 April) after a two-day rest at his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. He spent his short holiday recovering from the strains of a busy Easter schedule.

SYNOPSIS: Everywhere the popular Pope appears these days he attracts massive crowds. On Wednesday, after a two-day absence the Pope was greeted by 40,000 people in St. Peter's Square. The Easter period is a busy one for the Pope. He appeared publicly on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday to give blessings and mark the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Christ.

In a traditional exchange of letters at Easter, Pope John Paul received the official thanks of the Anglican Church for his commitment to social justice and Christian unity. The Rome representative of the Anglican community, Dr. Harry Smythe, said he had also thanked the Pope for using the word "irreversible" in the context of his commitment of the Roman Catholic Church to the unity of all Christian churches.

In his address to the crowd the Pope prayed for the victims of the Easter earthquake in Yugoslavia and Albania and for those suffering during armed struggles in Rhodesia, Uganda and Nicaragua. The Pontiff appealed for "peace for the dead, help for the injured and homeless, humanity towards prisoners and clemency for the defeated. There were fears that the audience might not be held because of rain, but the sky cleared just before the Pope's appearance.
