Background: Burnley, English League champions, were swept out of the European Cup soccer tournament when Hamburg SV beat them by four goals to one at the Volksparkatadion, Hamburg, Mar 15.
The match began quietly, and Burnley seemed to be on top, but after eight minutes Hamburg went ahead. Seeler and Doerfel, who had a hand in all the goals, were responsible. From a long kick by Hamburg goalkeeper Schnoor, Seeler headed the ball to Doerfel, who kicked into the centre for Sturmer to head past Burnley goalkeeper Blacklaw.
Again Burnley seemed bout to score, but attack after attack was frustrated by bad-luck and goalkeeper Schnoor. Three minutes before the half-time whistle, Doerfel forced a corner. Sturmer took the kick and Seeler, swooping like a bird from 25-yards, headed past Blacklaw.
Twelve minutes after the interval Harris, Burnley outside-left, lifted a right-foot shot past Schnoor and the English team still looked good enough to win. But within six minutes Hamburg had scored two more goals, from Doerfel and Seeler, and were into the European Cup semi-final with an aggregate of 5-4.
