May I demonstration by Mrs. Indira Gandhi's Congress Party against the proposed Special Courts turned violent in New Delhi. The procession of several thousand supporters was led by her younger son Mr. Sanjay Gandhi. As the processionists reached the main shopping centre of New Delhi the Jan Path, Connaught Place complex several of them ran towards the shops asking the shopkeepers to close down. Violence followed. Police charged them with canes followed by firing of tear gas. The demonstrators stoned the police and some times successful threw back the tear gas shells. As the processionists called for the shops to be closed, several of them indulged in loot. At the end of violence several hundred including Sanjay Gandhi were arrested.
