Background: Demonstrators in Paris marched through La Place de La Republique on Thursday (December 4) in protest at the trial of sixteen Basque prisoners in Burgos, Spain.
Several French organisations, including building workers and Communists, called for the demonstration against the trial which began on Thursday. Among the groups were the Communist Party, the Socialist Party, the League for the Rights of Man, and the French Committee for Spain.
Six of the men on trial are accused of killing San Sebastian's Chief of Police in August, 1968. During the demonstration, several protests were handed in to the Spanish Embassy in Paris. Meanwhile, the West German Consul kidnapped in San Sebastian by Basque extremists on Tuesday (December 1) is still missing. In London, two Spaniards began a fast in Trafalger Square on Thursday evening in protest against the trial.
