Background: Italy's Christian Democrat government resigned on Friday (30 April). Reuters, reporting form Rome, quoted Christian Democrat Party officials as saying that a general election would now be held on 20 June.

The Prime Minister, Signor Aldo Moro, architect of the 79 day minority government decided on resignation after a cabinet meeting which followed the Prime Minister's failure to bet an agreement in parliament on an emergency economic plan. Signor Moro's government was Italy's 38th since 1943.

After the cabinet meeting he called on the Italian President, Signor Giovanni Leone, and handed in his resignation. This is the second time this year that Signor Moro has resigned. In January his Christian Democrat Coalition government walked out of parliament.

President Leone later held talks with political leaders before dissolving parliament, and setting the date for the general election which, according to Reuters, could bring the Communist Party into the next government.

In his final speech to parliament, Signor Moro reflected the growing anxiety with the violence, unrest and political-economic uncertainty in Italy today.

Signor Moro said that a "dark subversive design" was taking shape in Italy and it was based on terror. Additionally there have been several clashes in major Italian cities this week between police and political demonstrators.
