Background: THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL CABINET TODAY (SUNDAY) HANDED OVER ADMINISTRATION TO LOYAL SOLDIERS AND POLICE UNDER THE ARMY CHIEF, MAJOR-GENERAL AGUIYI IRONSI, AS A TEMPORARY MEASURE. VISNEWS FILM INCLUDES SCENES OF TRAFFIC HELD UP IN LAGOS BY ROAD BLOCKS, AND LIBRARY MATERIAL SHOWING THE SARDOUNA OF SOKOTA AND CHIEF AKINTOLA -- THE TWO NIGERIAN PREMIERS SAID TO HAVE BEEN ASSASSINATED -- AND CHIEF AWOLOWA, NOW IN JAIL, WHO IS EXPECTED TO FIGURE IN MOVES FOR A NEW GOVERNMENT.

THE COUP IN NIGERIA WAS STAGED BY ARMY MUTINEERS. WITH LOYAL ARMY ELEMENTS NOW IN CHARGE OF THE EASTERN, WESTERN AND MID-WESTERN REGIONS, THE MUTINEERS' SUCCESS APPEARS TO BE LARGELY CONFINED TO THE NORTHERN REGION. LAGOS WAS REPORTED TO BE QUIET TODAY ALTHOUGH THREE PEOPLE WERE SHOT DEAD FOR FAILING TO STOP AT AN ARMY ROADBLOCK. SUCH ROADBLOCKS HAVE BEEN SET UP AROUND LAGOS AIRPORT, TURNING BACK HUNDREDS OF CARS AND DELAYING TRAFFIC FOR LONG PERIODS.

THE TWO ASSASSINATED PREMIERS, CHIEF SAMUEL AKINTOLA, PREMIER OF THE WESTERN REGION, AND THE SARDOUNA OF SOKOTO, SIR AHMADU BELLO, PREMIER OF THE NORTHERN REGION, ARE SAID TO HAVE BEEN KILLED BY ARMY MUTINEERS. CHIEF AKINTOLA WAS SHOT DOWN IN IBADAN, ABOUT 150 MILES (240 KMS) NORTH OF LAGOS, AND SIR AHMADU AND HIS WIFE DIED TOGETHER IN THEIR HOME AT KADUNA. THEIR HOUSE WAS BURNED DOWN.

MEANWHILE, THE COUNTRY'S TEMPORARY LEADER, GENERAL AGUIYI IRONSI, IS LEADING HIS LOYAL TROOPS IN THE SEARCH FOR THE MISSING NIGERIAN PRIME MINISTER, SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA, WHO IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN KIDNAPPED AND TAKEN TO CALABAR, IN EASTERN NIGERIA, WITH HIS FINANCE MINISTER, MR. OKOTIE EBOH. IT'S IN CALABAR THAT ANOTHER FORMER WESTERN REGION PREMIER, CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO, LIES IN JAIL.

CHIEF AWOLOWO WAS SENTENCED IN 1963 TO TEN YEARS JAIL FOR PLOTTING TO OVERTHROW THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. IT IS CONSIDERED IN LAGOS THAT THE REBELS MIGHT HAVE A PLAN TO FORCE THE CAPTURED MINISTERS TO NEGOTIATE UNDER DURESS WITH CHIEF AWOLOWO.
