Background: The Eiffel Tower, France's most famous landmark, is undergoing a major facelift. Workmen are swarming over the structure, stripping away nearly 1000 tonnes of weight to ease the present intolerable burden on the tower's legs. Paris's "Grande Dame" will have new lifts, a fresh coat of paint to protect it, and new restaurants of a standard intended to entice more Parisian visitors. However renovations are taking far longer to restore the 94-year-old tower than Gustave Eiffel took to construct it. The French engineer had the monument finished in 1889, a month ahead of time in just over two years, but renovation is running a year behind schedule and will take at least another three years, according to site officials. In recent years the capital's number one tourist attraction has been surpassed in visitor interest by the Pompidou Centre, an ultra-modern structure of pipes and tubes which has been luring Parisians away from the tower. But the recent announcement that the 1989 Universal Exposition will be held in Paris should restore the "Grand Old Lady" to her former glory as the city's most glamorous star.
