Background: As top league sides entered the Football Association Cup in the third round, leading London side Tottenham Hotspur were given an unexpectedly close fight by Carlisle, who are placed sixth in Division Two of the English League.

Spurs, lying seventh in the First Division, have been beaten at home only once this season, and with a home goal rating of 30 to 9 seemed like to walk over their northern challengers.

But it proved a more difficult task for the Londoners, with Carlisle battling every inch of the way and gaining the respectful applause of the White Hart Lane crowd.

Alan Gilzean put Spur ahead from a corner in the 19th minute, but Stan Bowles gained a fine equaliser in the 31st minute. The second half produced a stalemate situation and the final score was I-I.
