Background: French President, Georges Pompidou promised his country's continued assistance to Upper Volta when he arrived in the African country's capital, Ouagadougou on Monday (20 November). The French President, on an official two day visit, told Upper Volta's leader, General Sangoule Lamizana, that French aid would continue to adapt itself to the country's needs. He emphasised that France did not want to impose the co-operation, but only to aid Upper volta's planning.

Upper volta became Independent in 1960 and is the poorest country in French-speaking Africa, with an annual gross national product of 30 pounds sterling per head.

President Pompidou also visited Togo on this, his third tour of africa. On his previous two visits he toured Mauritania, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroun, Gabonese Republic, Niger and Chad.

SYNOPSIS: French President George Pompidou flew into the Upper Volta capital of Ouagadougou on Monday for the start of a two-day visit to the country. Hundreds of enthusiastic tribal dancers greeted the French President who is making his third trip to former French Africa. He was invited by the military government that rules Upper volta, which achieved Independence in 1960.

President Pompidou and his wife were officially welcomed by Upper Volta's leader, General Sangoule Lamizana and his wife. With the airport decked in the French tri-colour and the black, white and red flag of Upper Volta, President Pompidou was invited to inspect any Army Guard of Honour.

Following the initial greeting at the air port, President Pompidou and his wife were driven to Ouagadougou's Independence Square where General Lamizana read a speech of welcome. The French President replied by promising continued French aid for Upper Volta's needs. President Pompidou said he was prepared to discuss haw best to adapt this co-operation. He said that Upper Volta has the greatest riches, a people of courageous peasants and soldiers. President Pompidou added that he hoped his visit would help develop co-operation between the two countries.

President Pompidou included Togo on this tour of French speaking Africa. He was to have visited Dahomey but a military coup forced a change of plans.
