    TRAGEDY STRUCK IN THE SECOND LAP OF THE RACE WHEN THE 23-YEAR-OLD NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION IAN VEITCH DIED AFTER A CRASH ON A CORNER. VEITCH, WHO WON THIS YEAR'S NEW ZEALAND 350 c.c. T.T. RACE, WAS DEAD ON ARRIVAL AT DOUGLAS HOSPITAL.

    IVY'S TIME WAS TWO HOURS 16 MINUTES 24.8 SECONDS AND HE COVERED THE 226.4 MILES (364.35 KILOMETRES) AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 99.58 MILES AN HOUR (169 KPH). ON THE FIRST LAP IVY SET A STANDING START RECORD WITH 21 MINUTES 27.4 SECONDS -- 105.51 MILES AN HOUR (169.8 KPH). THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS HELD BY BRITAIN'S FORMER WORLD CHAMPION, MIKE HAILWOOD WITH 104.5 MILES AN HOUR (167.17 KPH). HAILWOOD WAS A SPECTACULAR TODAY BECAUSE HONDA HAVE WITHDRAWN FROM CHAMPIONSHIP MOTORCYCLE RACING.

    ITALIAN RENZO PASOLINI ON A BENELLI CAME SECOND TO IVY, COVERING THE COURSE IN TWO HOURS 18 MINUTES 36.8 SECONDS. THIRD WAS EAST GERMAN HELMUT ROSNER.

    IVY, WHO IS THE REIGNING WORLD 125 c.c. CHAMPION, WAS CARRIED TO THE VICTORY ROSTRUM AFTER HAVING HIS TATTERED RIGHT BOOT CUT OFF. HE APPEARED TO BE IN CONSIDERABLE PAIN AND EXPLAINING THAT HIS FOOT HAD CAUGHT BENEATH THE FOOTREST.
