Background: In London Feb 26 Visnews filmed Scottish miners as they marched 540-strong through the streets to the National Coal Board at Hobart House in Protest against pit closures. With a pipe band heading the procession they were led by the Vice-Chairman of the National Miners Union Scottish Area, Mr. Alec Moffatt.
In the vicinity of Hobart House the police interfered with their plans. The marchers were halted and only a delegation of six admitted to the National Coal Board to state their case.
The miners are backed by several other organisations including the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers and the committees of the bricklayers and the South London Engineers.
The South Wales Mineworkers' Executive Committee decided Feb 24 to give full support to the marches and lobbies. The executive also carried a strong solution pledging solidarity with the Belgian miners in their struggle against pit closures.
