Background: Thirteen-year old Jenny Turrali has broken two more Australian swimming records at the New South Wales Swimming Championships in Sydney, Australia. On Saturday, (January 12), Miss. Turrall, who lives in Sydney, set records in both the four-hundred-metre Junior Women's Freestyle and the ages fourteen, fifteen and sixteen-year-old categories of the two-hundred-metre freestyle.
Last Wednesday, (January 9), at the competition, Miss. Turrall broke her own world's record in the 1,500-metres freestyle. She also holds the world record for the 800-metre freestyle event.
She had an easy win in the 200-metre event. Her swimming mate, Sally Lockyer, another rising swimming star in Australia, was nearly two seconds behind Miss. Turrall in second place. Miss. Lockyer is Miss. Turrall's strongest competitor.
But in the 400-metre freestyle, Miss. Lockyer could only manage third place. Miss. Turrall finished first, edging out Narelle Moras by half a second. Miss. Moras also broke the Australian 400-metre record that had been held by Shane Gould, the Australian swimming sensation who swept all the women's freestyle events in the last Commonwealth Games.
Miss. Turrall will lead the Australian swimming team to the Games this year in Christchurch, New Zealand. She will swim in the 100, 200, 400, and 800-metre individual freestyle events as well as the relays. There is no 1500 metre freestyle event in the Commonwealth Games.
