Background: People living on the outskirts of Lusaka in Zambia are getting better medical assistance because of the advent of a new mobile clinic. The Lusaka City Council bought the clinic from Britain for 14,000 Kwaches (about GBP 6,000 sterling).

The mobile clinic was needed because there was a lack of medical services for people squatting in the urban areas on the perimeters of the city. it also meant that people did not have to travel such long distances to clinics in the towns and the University teaching Hospital in Lusaka. There are about 400,000 people in Lusaka, and many are living in the urban settlements. These settlements are growing as more people turn to the cities for employment, and Lusaka's social problems are increasing.

The clinic began operating in September last year, and in three months, almost 10,000 people had used it.
