Background: President Suharto of Indonesia has arrived in Egypt for a three-day state visit. Judging by the reception he received on his arrival at Cairo airport on Sunday (16 October), his visit was considered to be one of significance.
SYNOPSIS: As the President's aircraft taxied along the tarmac, guns bellowed out a salute.
President Suharto was accompanied by his wife, and an entourage that included several Indonesian cabinet ministers.
Egypt's President Anwar Sadat was waiting to greet the Indonesian leader, and the red carpet had been rolled out for an inspection of troops. General Suharto showed no signs of tiredness, even though his Middle Est tour gave him a very full itinerary. In the previous week he had visited Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Syria, where he had hold talks with the countries' leaders. His tour was organised as a demonstration of Indonesia's support of the Arabs over the Palestinian issue, which seemed timely in view of the current Middle East peace conference negotiations.
In Egypt General Suharto was scheduled to have talks with President Sadat and other top officials during his three-day stay.
??? Suharto and Madame Sadat met in the VIP lounge at Cairo airport with their husbands before driving into the city for a reception. The two leaders were to discuss economic and international affairs in their later talks.
