    MR TSIRIMOKOS, WHO BEGAN THE DEBATE ON TUESDAY, LAST NIGHT MADE A FINAL EFFORT TO PERSUADE DEPUTIES STILL LOYAL TO MR GEORGE PAPANDREOU, LEADER OF THE OTHER CENTRE UNION FACTION, TO CHANGE THEIR MINDS. BUT THEY DIDN'T, AND THE GOVERNMENT LOST THE VOTE BY 24 - 135 FOR, 159 AGAINST.

    AFTER THE DEBATE, MR CANNELLOPOULOS SAID HE WOULD ASK KING CONSTANTINE IF HIS PARTY COULD FORM A NEW GOVERNMENT. MEANWHILE, MR PAPANDREOU, WHOSE OUSTING AS PRIME MINISTER BEGAN THE CURRENT TROUBLES, WANTS A FRESH GENERAL ELECTION.
