Background: Traffic congestion in the world's major cities is an international problem. The rapid expansion of private and commercial vehicle traffic in Algiers is a reflection of Algeria's economic growth and is tackled by the implementation of a huge road-building programme. The main road between the capital, Algiers, and the city of Constantine is now being converted into a modern motorway, despite the difficulties of driving the road through the rocky gore of Palestro. Here, engineers are using sophisticated cutting machinery to bore through the mountains. The engineer in charge if this project is Mahmoud Rouabm who aims to complete the project by the end of this year.
