Background: This is the area near the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea, October 1967.

All along the Demilitarized Zone the U.S. and South Korean forces maintain outposts, keeping a close watch on the activities of the North Korean soldiers on the other side.

Two trucks of soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division pass through the gate marking the southern boundary of the Demilitarized Zone en route to the starting point of their patrol.

The soldiers dismount their vehicles and a man with a mine detector leads the patrol down the road. As the patrol sweeps the road, a metal object is detected by the mine sweeper. One of the soldiers uses his bayonet to dig around the metal object, only to find it is not a mine and it is safe to continue the patrol.

The "Indian Head" Division soldiers finally arrive at their destination, Guard Post Lucy. This outpost is one of many manned to keep an eye on the North Korean communist activities across the Demilitarized Zone.

One 2nd Division military policeman looks through a periscope at several white buildings on the North Korean side of the truce line.

This type of activity is important in the surveillance of enemy attempts at infiltrating into the South.
