Background: The Middleheim outdoor museum in Antwerp, Belgium, is one of the few museums of its type in the world. The year, Middleheim celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary...and to mark the occasion, the museum authorities have expanded their regular biennial outdoor exhibition to state a special display of modern Asian sculpture.

In conjunction with Antwerp city authorities, the museum has negotiated with Indian and Japanese collections to show the Asian masterpieces...and to give the European public a chance to see an aspect of contemporary Asian art rarely on display in Europe.

The larger sculptures stand in the quiet fields of the museum grounds. Three major Japanese exhibits are on display covering three generations of Japanese art...and the largest collection of modern Indian sculpture ever shown outside Asia. Among the exhibits are works by Japan's Masayuki Nagare, Minami Tada and Takamichi Ito, and by Indian artists Pochkhanawala, Dhan Raj Bhagat and Satish Gujral.

SYNOPSIS: These Asian sculptures are part of a display of contemporary Asian art currently being staged at the Middleheim outdoor museum in Antwerp, Belgium. Number Thirty-four is titled "Metal Landscape"...the work of the Indian artist, Pochkhanwala."
Exhibit Thirteen... "Tridimensional Picture"..by another Indian sculptor, Satish Gujral. The Asian art exhibition has been specially staged to mark the Middleheim museum's twenty-fifth anniversary.

It contains the largest collection of contemporary Indian sculptures ever exhibited outside Asia. This Exhibit number One..given the tile "Crete" by Dhan Raj Bhagat.

Many of the valuable sculptures are actually on display in the quiet fields of the museum's extensive grounds. Middleheim is one of the few outdoor museums in the world.

Japanese museums have also contributed to Middleheim's Asian exhibition. This piece of modern art--exhibit number Seventy-Nine--is called"Welcome, Welcome" by its creator, Masayaki Nagare.

...And this is exhibit Eighty-Eight... "Space Eye Number Two" by Minami Tada. The exhibition contains three Japanese sculptures...to represent three generations of Japanese contemporary art.

The display opened at Middleheim in June and continues until October. The museum authorities see the exhibition as not only marking Middleheim's twenty-fifth anniversary....but giving the public the opportunity to view works of Asian art rarely seen in Europe.
