Background: President Ferdinand Marcos has mobilised Government agencies and ordered an acceleration of relief work to cope with the aftermath of the worst recorded disaster in the country's history.

Relief recovery operations go on at Cotabato City, where some 2,000 soldiers and many civilians are trying to restore order from chaos and havoc created by the shocks and three tidal waves.

Drillers and welders are busy to dig out bodies from the wrecked hotels. Huge cranes were mobilised to clean up the collapsed buildings.

The devastated island of Mindanao was rocked again by another sizeable tremor early on Thursday (Aug 19) but there were no reports of any damage being caused.

More than 20 aftershocks have been recorded after the main quake on Tuesday which registered 7.8 on the open-ended Richter scale.

Later casualty figures are 3,131 dead and 3,117 missing. In addition, 90,000 people are homeless.

In a briefing with military and government officials, Marcos indicated Filipinos should follow China's example last month when it mobilised all its citizens for emergency work during a similar earthquake disaster.

He urged residents in Manila and other areas spared by the quake to aid their fellow countrymen in the South most of them members of the Muslim minority.
