    American athletes performed well at the one-day Sports Nippon International track and field meeting in Tokyo on May 6. Mark Rowe of the United States won the men's 400-metres race in 45.91 seconds. But Japan dominated the 10,000 metres event. Masaya Shintaku, one of Japan's top middle-distance runners, won the race with Tanzania's Juma Ikangaa coming a close second. The Japanese also performed well in the high-jump. Takao Sakamoto's jump of 2.30 metres won him the title and a new Japanese record. Rose Tata of Kenya won the women's 400-metres hurdles in 58.20 seconds and the 800-metres race in 2:09:08 seconds. But the Americans dominated most of the track events. Burt Williams came first in the men's 400-metres hurdles in 49.69 seconds. John Lenstrohn took the men's 110-metres hurdles and Gervaise McCraw the women's 100-metres.
