    Background: THE SOVIET OCEANOGRAPHIC SHIP MIKHAIL LOMONOSOV IS STUDYING THE FLOW OF CURRENTS IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. LAST WEEK (20 NOVEMBER) THE VESSEL VISITED RECIFE, PERNAMBUCO, IN BRAZIL, TO PICK UP SUPPLIES AND FOUR SOUTH AMERICAN SCIENTISTS.

    THE 69 SCIENTISTS ABOARD WILL STUDY THE MARITIME CURRENTS OF THE TROPICAL ZONE OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. THE TRIP IS IN PREPARATION FOR A STUDY TO BE SPONSORED BY THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION IN 1963.

    THE EXPEDITION'S LEADER, PROFESSOR GEORGE PONOMARENKO, SAID THAT HIS GROUP LAST YEAR DISCOVERED VERY STRONG COUNTER-CURRENT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, NEAR THE AFRICAN COAST. THEY WERE GIVEN THE NAME OF LOMONOSOV EQUATORIAL CURRENTS. THROUGH THESE UNDERWATER STUDIES, SCIENTISTS HOPE TO FORESEE WEATHER CHANGES IN EUROPE AND LATIN AMERICA.

    IN RECIFE, THE RUSSIANS, INSPECTED THE CITY AND TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS. THEIR BOAT WAS A CENTRE OF ATTRACTION FOR BRAZILIANS. ALTHOUGH ONLY SCIENTIST WERE PERMITTED TO BOARD THE VESSEL.
