Background: IN MALAWI, NEWSMEN AND PHOTOGRAPHERS WERE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) ALLOWED TO VISIT THE LAKE RESORT AREA OF FORT JOHNSTON FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE ABOUT 200 RIOTERS KILLED TWO PEOPLE AND RANSACKED GOVERNMENT INSTALLATIONS THERE LAST SATURDAY. FORT JOHNSTON IS ABOUT 120 MILES (195 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF BLANTYRE, AND THE GANG OF RIOTERS IS BELIEVED TO HAVE ENTERED THE TOWN IN FOUR LORRIES DURING THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING.

FORT JOHNSTON IS THE HOME TOWN OF THE FORMER EDUCATION MINISTER, MR. CHIPEMBERE, WHO FLED THE COUNTRY LAST SEPTEMBER AFTER THE CRISIS IN WHICH SEVERAL MINISTERS WERE DENOUNCED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, DR. HASTINGS BANDA. IN THEIR ATTACK ON THE TOWN, THE GANG OF RIOTERS KILLED THE WIFE AND CHILD OF AN AFRICAN POLICE INSPECTOR.

THE RIOTERS DAMAGED THE POLICE STATION AND THE POST OFFICE. FROM THE POLICE ARMOURY THEY STOLE 150 RIFLES AND 2,000 ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION, AND IN THE POST OFFICE WRECKED THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNIT. THEY ALSO BURNED THE HOME AND MOTOR CAR OF CHIEF MPONDA, WHO IS LOYAL TO THE GOVERNMENT. CHIEF MPONDA HAD TO FLEE FROM THE TOWN TO SAVE HIS LIFE.

LATER, MALAWI SECURITY FORCES DESTROYED A CAMP SAID TO HAVE BEEN USED BY THE GANG, ARRESTED SEVEN ALLEGED RIOTERS AND SHOT AND KILLED ANOTHER ALLEGED RIOTER WHO HAD BEEN RESISTING ARREST. THE SECURITY FORCES ALSO TOOK POSSESSION OF THREE OF THE FOUR LORRIES SAID TO HAVE BEEN USED BY THE GANG.
