Background: ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE CYCLISTS TOOK PART IN THE LIEGE-BASTOGNE-LIEGE RACE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). IT WAS THE 50TH TIME THE RACE HAD BEEN STAGED AND IT IS RATED AS ON OF EUROPE'S HARDEST. HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS MADE IT NO EASIER THIS YEAR.

VETERAN CYCLISTS PLANKAERT (BELGIUM), BOCKPLANT (BELGIUM), VANCONINGSLOO (BELGIUM), ADORNI (ITALY). ENTHOVEN (HOLLAND), ANQUETIL (FRANCE) AND RAMSBOTTOM (BRITAIN) HELD COMMANDING LEADS FROM THE START AND HAD LITTLE DIFFICULTY IN FIGHTING OFF TENTATIVE CHALLENGES.

FIRST THREE INTO THE LIEGE STADIUM FOR THE FINAL SPRINT FINISH AFTER THE 245 KM (NEARLY 95 MILES) RACE WERE BOCKPLANT, VANCONINGSLOO AND ADORNI - AND THAT WAS THE FINAL ORDER IN WHICH THEY WERE PLACE. PLANKAERT FINISHED FOURTH.
