Background: TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY (TUESDAY), ON THE 4TH OF MAY 1945, GERMAN FORCES IN NORTHERN GERMANY, THE NETHERLANDS AND DENMARK CAPITULATED, AND THE FOLLOWING DAY BRITISH TROOPS MOVED OVER THE DANISH FRONTIER. FOR THE DANES IT MARKED THE END OF FIVE YEARS' OCCUPATION BY THE NAZI REGIME.
WHEN WAR BROKE OUT, AND DANISH GOVERNMENT IMMEDIATELY PROCLAIMED DENMARK'S NEUTRALITY AND IT WAS HOPED THAT THE COUNTRY WOULD BE ABLE TO REMAIN NEUTRAL AS IN 1914. ALTHOUGH HITLER HAD DECLARED THAT DANISH NEUTRALITY WOULD BE RESPECTED, IN JANUARY 1940 HE GAVE ORDERS FOR THE OCCUPATION OF NORWAY AND DENMARK. GERMANY PRESENTED DENMARK WITH A 13 POINT ULTIMATUM STATING THAT SINCE ENGLAND INTENDED TO OCCUPY DENMARK, GERMANY WOULD PROTECT IT. SIMULTANEOUSLY GERMAN TROOPS CROSSED THE BORDER. THEY MET WITH SOME RESISTANCE WHICH WAS QUICKLY CRUSHED. WITH GERMANY BOMBERS CIRCLING COPENHAGEN, AND LITTLE CHANCE OF HELP FROM ENGLAND OF FRANCE, THE DANISH KING AND GOVERNMENT ACCEPTED THE OCCUPATION UNDER PROTEST.
GERMAN ATTEMPTS TO ABSORB DENMARK IN THE NEW EUROPE MET WITH FAILURE AND BY DEGREES DANISH RESISTANCE INCREASED. AFTER THE FALL OF ITALY IN 1943 GERMANY DECLARED MARTIAL LAW, ATTACKED THE DANISH ARMY, AND SCUTTLED A GREATER PART OF THE DANISH NAVY. IT WAS THE END OF ANY CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.
ON MAY 4TH CAME THE CAPITULATION AND THE NEXT DAY BRITISH TROOPS MOVED OVER THE DANISH FRONTIER. WHILE THE MAIN PART OF DENMARK WAS LIBERATED BY BRITISH TROOPS, SOVIET TROOPS MOVED INTO BORNHOLM WHERE ON MAY 7 SEVERAL PLACES WERE BOMBED BECAUSE THE GERMANS REFUSED TO CAPITULATE.
TODAY (TUESDAY) GENERALS OF BRITAIN, THE SOVIET UNION, AND THE UNITED STATES, LAID WREATHS AT COPENHAGEN'S CITADEL MONUMENT TO THOSE THAT FELL DURING THE WAR. A DANISH GUARD OF HONOUR ACCOMPANIED THE GENERALS, NOW IN CIVILIAN LIFE. FROM BRITAIN WAS GENERAL RICHARD DEWING, WHO SERVED WITH THE ALLIED MISSION TO DENMARK AND WAS MADE A MEMBER OF THE GRAND CROSS ORDER OF DENMARK. REPRESENTING THE SOVIET UNION WAS GENERAL FEODOR KOROTKOV, AND REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES, GENERAL FORD TRINDLE. THEY WERE ALL PERSONALLY INVOLVED WITH THE LIBERATION OF DENMARK.
