TRANSCRIPT: ROY DAVIS: Man's best friend the canine is often one of the best imitators of its master or mistress. A pet food company has sponsored a signing contest for dogs only to find out that man's best friends are natural born hams, willing to perform for food or television cameras.

Maxwell will never sing with the Beatles, but he did win second prize ... a new wardrobe. The winning baritone and his master rose to the occasion with an encores and gave a forceful performance.

It's next to impossible to suppress gate crashers and during the height of fierce competition you just cant tell the players from the porkers.

Background: Before you throw a slipper at your dog crooning at the moon, stop and think ... you may be losing more than a slipper. That cute little rascal who loves to chew your footwear so much may be worth money ... or at least able to earn his keep. Stifling a natural talent, even if it does sound unnatural to you, could have disastrous effects.

One American pet food company, with more of an eye for good publicity than an ear for good music, has just sponsored a canine crooning contest.

Scientists agree that dogs have a natural aptitude for aping their masters and mistresses. So next time your dog decides his vocal cords sound better in the early hours of the morning ... don't throw that slipper. Go out into the backyard with him ... raise your face to the moon and croon along. Your dog will pick up the note, and a prize winning duet could be the result.

Your neighbours may even start talking to you again a few years after you return with the impressive silver trophy the pet food company is giving each year.
